To compare the empathy level between first years and third year B.Sc nursing students of A selected college at Mangalore

Abstract

Introduction: Empathy is the recognition and understanding of the states of mind, beliefs, desires and particularly, emotions of others. Empathy is the process of attending to, understanding, and responding to another person's expressions of emotion and also a key element for establishing most kinds of meaningful social relationships between people. Empathy has been demonstrated to enhance the nurse patient relationship and to improve both patient and nurse satisfaction.

Objectives: To assess the level of empathy among first year B.Sc. Nursing students using the empathy scale. To assess the level of empathy among Third year B.Sc. Nursing students using the empathy scale. To compare the level of empathy between First year B.Sc. Nursing students.

Methods: The research design selected for the study was descriptive comparative design. Data was obtained from 40 first year B.Sc. Nursing students and 40 Third year B.Sc. Nursing students and the sample was selected using purpose sampling technique. Data was collected with the help of an empathy scale. The obtained data was analysed by using descriptive and Inferential statistics and interpreted terms of objectives of the study.

Results: The collected data must analysed by descriptive and inferential statistics. The result of the Studies showed that while the most of the third year B.Sc. Nursing students had good empathy, only 46% among first year B.Sc. Nursing students had good empathy more than half of the first year B.Sc. Nursing students had moderate empathy the comparison of area voice mean percentage scores of empathy show that both 1st year and third year B.Sc. nursing students had good empathy towards the other people (70.22%,74.76%) and other persons situation (61.65%,67.75%). With regard to self the 1st year B.Sc. nursing students had moderate empathy (57.25%) but the third year B.Sc. nursing students had good empathy (69.63%). Overall, both 1st year (61.06%) and third year (70.41%) students had good empathy. There was no significant association between the empathy score of 1st year and third B.Sc. nursing students with selected baseline characteristics.

Conclusion: In the present study most of the first year B.Sc. nursing students had good empathy, only 46% among third year B.Sc. Nursing students had good empathy. More than half of the third year B.Sc. Nursing students had moderate empathy.
